Tulipa 'Mistress'
Very pretty pink tulip. The colour is deeper at the base, fading towards the petal edges. This variety has been used to great effect at the Alnwick Garden, planted en-masse below flowering cherries. In our own borders, it has been reliably reflowering for several years now.

One of the newer, so-called 'Coronet' or 'Crown' tulips. We have to confess to not liking all the introductions which have been made in this group - the shape can be untidy in some manifestations. Tulipa 'Pretty Princess'
We trialled this on the farm a few years ago and found it to be a delightful new tulip - great for both containers and for the front of a border. The flowers are bright pink, with darker flaming, and have the rare attribute of a silver edge to the leaves. It has the popular 'Princess Irene' in its heritage and has the same flowering time and height.

Tulipa 'Red Dress'
Following in the footsteps of the popular established varieties 'Picture' & 'White Liberstar', is this rich red version of the crown tulip. The unique shape of this form of tulip results in flowers with extra thick petals, which are both robust and long-lasting. The flower buds start off much like the furled buds of a hybrid tea rose, opening to the typical 'crown' shape.

Tulipa 'Request'
We first encountered this tulip in the north of Holland some years ago, when it was quite new, and were intrigued by the unusual colour. At the time is was known as 'Quest' and the grower cut some flowers for us to bring home with us. We love it for its wonderful, tapered flowers, in a most unusual blend of copper-orange, flushed rose-mauve on the outside of the petals. The bonus of scent too!

Tulipa 'Slawa'
We have adored this tulip since first trialling it in our borders a few years ago. The colour seems to work well with any other warm hues - apricot, bronze, orange. We have used it in containers also for the past couple of years, combined with the shorter 'Copper Image' - a match made in heaven. Flowering in late April/early May at 20" (50cm).

Tulipa 'China Town' AGM
Flowers of phlox pink, fading to nearly white at the edges, are strongly flamed with fresh green. The leaves are banded silver-white.

Tulipa 'Green Spirit'
New in 2020
Is any colour combination cooler than green and white? The subtle colouring of this recent introduction will bring a sense of calm to plantings and also makes an excellent cut flower. The form is somewhat neater than 'Spring Green', with a slightly more flared outline, but there's not much in it between them. Flowering in late April/May at 18" (45cm).

This fairly new tulip bears much broader and stronger green flaming than the popular 'Spring Green', together with a very appealing lily flowered form. It makes a lovely cool mediator between brighter colours.

An old variety which is enjoying something of a renaissance. The flowers are pale pink with strong green flaming to the outside of the petals. Quite subtle.

Tulipa 'Purple Doll'
The narrow, pointed petals of this variety give the flowers a unique, starry character. The blooms are a rich, deep purple, with darkest green flaming to the outside of the petals. A sport of 'Doll's Minuet'.

Petals of warm pink broadly flushed with fresh green. The flowers also have the virtue of a distinctive 'lily-flowered' outline. This variety has been around for a few years now but always makes an impact. Note that the flowers open quite pale and take a few days to attain full colour.
