Tulipa 'Curly Sue'
Beautiful, charismatic tulip. The fringing is self-coloured but this colour changes subtly, both as the flower ages and in different qualities of light, producing shades of wine, from claret to burgundy.

We introduced this variety to the UK quite a few years ago, after being bowled over by it at Keukenhof. We subsequently supplied bulbs to Gardening 'Which' for their bulb trials, where it won a 'Best Buy' award.The double flowers are in warm tones of pink/rose/white and are held up beautifully on strong stems. This is a tulip which needs careful placement to ensure that its effect is not overpowered by its surroundings. Giving it a background of dark foliage can be successful, as can planting it sparsely through grass which is not over-lush. Bulb size 8+ cm

Tulipa 'Pretty Princess'
We trialled this on the farm a few years ago and found it to be a delightful new tulip - great for both containers and for the front of a border. The flowers are bright pink, with darker flaming, and have the rare attribute of a silver edge to the leaves. It has the popular 'Princess Irene' in its heritage and has the same flowering time and height.

Tulipa 'Request'
We first encountered this tulip in the north of Holland some years ago, when it was quite new, and were intrigued by the unusual colour. At the time is was known as 'Quest' and the grower cut some flowers for us to bring home with us. We love it for its wonderful, tapered flowers, in a most unusual blend of copper-orange, flushed rose-mauve on the outside of the petals. The bonus of scent too!

Tulipa 'Red Dress'
Following in the footsteps of the popular established varieties 'Picture' & 'White Liberstar', is this rich red version of the crown tulip. The unique shape of this form of tulip results in flowers with extra thick petals, which are both robust and long-lasting. The flower buds start off much like the furled buds of a hybrid tea rose, opening to the typical 'crown' shape.

Remarkable new variety, with fully petalled flowers of claret, feathering out into a broad white edge. Like a double form of 'Spitsbergen' (it comes from the same grower!). This is the wonderful pink tulip used to great effect at Arundel Castle (the first garden to be featured in Carol Klein's recent 'Great British Gardens' series). The blooms are huge and a lovely, warm pink. We were at the Castle earlier this year and photographed the display then.

Tulipa 'Bleu Aimable'
Sought-after old variety (dating from 1916) with neat flowers of cool, lavender-blue. It gave rise to the sport 'Blue Parrot' but is itself hard to come by now. We love to grow it with the dark 'Paul Scherer'.
'Bleu Aimable' has often been justly claimed to be the 'bluest' of the so-called 'blue' tulips, along with its sport 'Blue Parrot'. We find it to be reliably perennial, as might be expected...
Tulipa 'China Town' AGM
Flowers of phlox pink, fading to nearly white at the edges, are strongly flamed with fresh green. The leaves are banded silver-white.

Tulipa 'Indeland'
New in 2017 - As recommeded by Which Gardening in 2018
We saw this variety being trialled in Holland a few years ago and set our sights on it there and then. The shape is informal and the colour absolutely stunning - purple with a centre rib of near black, flaring through burgundy to magenta, on the outside of each petal. We find such complex colouring totally beguiling and what tulips are all about....

Hyacinth 'Pink Surprise'
Pink hyacinths had never been a favourite with us, until a cheerful spring bouquet of them, mixed with cream-edged pink tulips, brought about a change of mind. The pink was a prettier shade than other pink hyacinths we had seen before and investigation showed that it was a new variety. So here it is - 'Pink Surprise' - the lovely, light fondant-pink we were looking for.
