Dahlia 'Laughing Lizza' (Laughing Lizzy)

This new variety made a surprise appearance on the dahlia trials at Wisley a couple of years ago, when it was submitted in error for a different dahlia. It proved to be a serendipitous mistake as the 'impostor' immediately found favour with the judging panel. Subsequently during our own travels to the Dutch trial fields, we managed to identify it as 'Laughing Lizza'. Well, here she is...

Dahlia 'Liquid Desire'
Pretty, ruffled flowers defy conventional dahlia categorisation and are all the more charming for it. The golden centres are an open invitation to pollinating insects and the colour of the petals range from deepest red-purple at the heart, through lighter shades of the same hue, to near white at the petal edges. Its informality makes for a delightful border subject to mingle with more formal varieties.

The vibrant shocking pink tones of the no-longer grown 'Karma Fuchsiana' came to mind the moment we saw this new variety. It's a pop of colour we have been missing in our borders for a few years now, so we have high hopes for this newcomer. The flowers are a little larger and fuller than 'Fuchsiana', which makes for a real blast of saturated colour.
