Dahlia imperialis

This impressive species reaches heights in excess of 8' (2.5m) in a single season. To ensure flowering, it needs to be grown in a situation protected from frost, since blooms seldom appear before late October. For many gardeners (as for us here on our exposed Essex farm) it will be a splendid foliage plant, with just the rare indian summer offering the bonus of flowers. We were delighted to see a few flowers in 2017!
Our image comes by courtesy of Alan Gray of East Ruston Old Vicarage at East Ruston, Norfolk, who grows his wonderful specimen under cover of a taller than average greenhouse to ensure regular flowering.
