The 'Dragon Arum' sports large spathes of glossy, deep purple, surrounding a near-black spadix, in early summer. Even before these emerge, the purple spotted stems of the plants and handsome foliage add an exotic air to the border. When choosing your planting site, be aware that the spathes emit a smell of dead flesh for a couple of days just after opening - this dissipates after pollination has taken place, courtesy of blow flies. Ours have lived for many years outside the door of our potting shed, requiring us to hold our breath for a day or two whilst admiring the show. Happy in well-drained soil in sun or light shade. Ht. around 3' (90cm).
