Tulipa 'Kansas Proud'
Velvety blooms open faded rose-purple, with a lighter base. As the flowers mature, they darken to rich cassis, with the white flaming from the base giving the subtle bloom of a ripe victoria plum. Flowering in late April/May at 20" (50cm).

Remarkable new variety, with fully petalled flowers of claret, feathering out into a broad white edge. Like a double form of 'Spitsbergen' (it comes from the same grower!). Tulipa 'Pink Impression'
This is the wonderful pink tulip used to great effect at Arundel Castle (the first garden to be featured in Carol Klein's recent 'Great British Gardens' series). The blooms are huge and a lovely, warm pink. We were at the Castle earlier this year and photographed the display then.

Tulipa orphanidea 'Flava'
Yellow flowers flushed orange-red and with black anthers. The flowers have an attractive narrow form, with pointed petals. This multiflowered species, a native of Greece and Turkey, prefers a very sharply drained site, such as a scree bed. Height 7" (18cm).

Tulipa 'Bleu Aimable'
Sought-after old variety (dating from 1916) with neat flowers of cool, lavender-blue. It gave rise to the sport 'Blue Parrot' but is itself hard to come by now. We love to grow it with the dark 'Paul Scherer'.

Tulipa 'China Town' AGM
Flowers of phlox pink, fading to nearly white at the edges, are strongly flamed with fresh green. The leaves are banded silver-white.
Very beautiful variety which, at a height of just 1' (30cm) is ideal for fronting borders, edging paths and for container planting. See our note against hyacinth 'Carnegie' for a great planting partnership.

Tulipa 'Indeland'
New in 2017 - As recommeded by Which Gardening in 2018
We saw this variety being trialled in Holland a few years ago and set our sights on it there and then. The shape is informal and the colour absolutely stunning - purple with a centre rib of near black, flaring through burgundy to magenta, on the outside of each petal. We find such complex colouring totally beguiling and what tulips are all about....
